At the dawn of the invention of the printing press, heresies were being spread far and wide. And that's when beautiful art came to the rescue.
Back in the 1500s there were some men of the church, like St. Charles Borromeo, Robert Bellarmine, St. Philip Neri and others who saw great decay gnawing at the faith of the flock. With hearts full of love, they collaborated with artists like Caravaggio & Barocci, to heal and strengthen their confused generation. The result of these commissions did what Saint JP2 expressed, revealed God to us in a profound way.
This art overcame the heresies of the day.
You could say this art saved the faith.
And of course this would not have been possible without the patrons who funded the work. And this would not have been possible unless they were able to put this art in a place all could see and be inspired by it. The place to put art back then was in the church.
And this Triple threat also required much from the artists.
This prayer in the liturgy of the hours says it all.
Father, may everything we do begin with your inspiration
and continue with your saving help.
Does your day begin with Christ's inspiration?
Is your work finding its origin in Christ?
Are you continuing to unite your film with Christ until it's finished?
Dear theologian, patron, or artists.
How's your heart? Is it looking like King David's heart? Humble and contrite?
It's a life long journey. Only our Blessed Mother had such a heart here on earth. But the good news is our perfection comes from striving, from struggling to be humble and contrite. Be patient with yourself. Just say yes to the grace God gives you. Strive in JOY. If we strive in this way we are part of the solution. The only failure here is not to begin again when we fall.
I gotta be straight with you. We've just started the film renaissance journey and I'm seeing how much this is going to require of me. AND you.
I need you to know you are in a battle. I'm assuming you are stepping into this filmmaking approach with a desire to have a humble and contrite heart.
A life in grace with Christ is a zillion times better than anything the film industry can flash your way. Of course the temptations are great, so your reliance on Christ must be greater. Pray with great confidence in God and beg him to guide your film work, and to guide all you do.
