Trust, Work, Fight, and keep Trusting in God's Providence as a Catholic Filmmaker
How often do you get to hear from a priest who is also an experienced film director share insights on film? Fr. Brian Jackson, SHM, spent time with us to answer questions on filmmaking.
When you are trying to listen to what the Lord wants you to do and you are living in a state of grace, you will hear him.
When you're fighting to do His will there are tactics which guarantee a successful outcome.
Do you have a spiritual director? If not find a very solid, trained spiritual director.
A daily prayer life is critical.
You also need solid moments of prayer. Silent prayer that you sit in His presence and I think when when we're do when we are doing his
will when we're not hiding from him when we're not uh doing things that that he
doesn't want us to do like on a constant basis like I'm not I'm not talking about like weakness I mean like like what like
consented like okay I know God doesn't want me to do this or I know God doesn't want me to watch this television series
or Netflix series or even be subscribed to Netflix or to watch this movie but
I'm going to watch it anyways or I'm going to do this anyways and I'm not going to change like it's hard for God
to speak to you because he's already speaking to you he's already saying like um hello like I don't want you to do
this and then you're like no okay well I don't really want to talk to you about that right now but give me some cool ideas for a movie like that's messed up
like God doesn't like he's not just like a g he's not a Genie in a Bottle so like
you if you do his will and you're open to even even being open to him even and
saying like Okay well I don't want you to do this or I want you to do this then that's when I think he can he can
inspire you
Approach your work in confidence.
Arrogance, Ego, Intelligence, and belief in self are sandcastle confidence.
Once the tide comes all the way in you will be wash out.
However if you want to be to be totally in the moment, totally malleable to your director's direction, then you need ultimate confidence.
Ultimate Confidence is bigger than any person, skill, or challenge you face, because it is of supernatural origin.
Ultimate confidence is from knowing, believing and living like you are the beloved child of the most high King. AKA creator of the universe.
It's got to come from the Lord.
When this is the foundation of how you operate, then whatever anyone else says to you, is water off a duck's back. You can take the criticism and use it in a positive way to bring greater glory to God.
If you do this, then fantastic. If you do this without the Lord, you are leaving a huge gift unwrapped, that will bring all you do to another level.
Approach with caution
To take down the Goliath of Hollywood, approach with the heart of King David. Humble and Contrite.
When acting, true freedom to express yourself comes in great quantities when we are humble in our dealings with the cast and crew and most of all with ourselves. Ask the Lord to work through you. Ask the Lord to let your performance bring glory to Him alone. Ask God to blind you from the good you do, so that your ego is not inflated by your talent.
I can't do this topic justice in a blog. To go deeper we need to connect and come together for the glory of God.
Pray that people will have generous hearts and fund this renaissance.
